Why is backing up to a Zip file important?

Many backup programs store backups in a proprietary format. If you want to access back up files, you need the original program to read the files. With File Backup Pro, all files are stored in the Zip compression format - the most popular compression format available. You can use many popular Zip programs, including WinZip® and PkZip® to extract or view backup files created with File Backup Pro. In fact, Windows® ME, XP and Vista ship with the ability to extract files from Zip compressed files. Unlike WinZip® and PkZip®, File Backup Pro gives you complete control over which files to backup and allows you to schedule backups.

I am having difficulty burning backups to a CD or DVD. What should I do?

Unfortunately backing up to CDs and DVDs is not always as straight forward as backing up to a hard drive or other media. Windows does not write directly to CDs or DVDs, if you wish to backup direct to a rewritable CD, you need DirectCD or InCD or another packet writing program. The program is normally delivered together with a CD-RW device.

Can you copy to the CD Drive from the explorer? if you have DirectCD from Roxio installed that should be possible. If not make sure the CD-RW is formatted for use with DirectCD.

How do I restore individual files?

You can restore individual files from within File Backup Pro by using the Restore Wizard page.
On the Restore Wizard Start page, select a Point in Time you would like to restore from and click the Next button.
On the Restore Files page, check the box to the left of the file(s) you want to restore and click the Next button.
Select the Restore Folder and click the Next button.
Select how to handle existing files and click the Restore button.

Because File Backup Pro stores backups in standard Zip files, you can use any Zip program to manage your File Backup Pro Zip files.

How much will Simple Backup compress my data?

It depends on the type of files you are compressing. Text files can often be compressed by up to 70%, but image files, which are already compressed, may be compressed less than 5%.

What are Differential and Incremental Backup Types?

Both Differential and Incremental Backup Types will only backup files that have changed since the last backup (files whose Archive bit is set to True - see the next question). Incremental backups will clear the archive bit of all the files they backup. Differential backups will not clear the archive bit of the files they backup.

Lets assume we start with a normal backup that clears the archive bit of all our data files.

If we perform a series of Incremental backups, only those files that have changed since the last incremental backup will be included in each backup. To restore from a series of Incremental backups, we need to restore from the Normal backup and each Incremental backup in the order they were created, but no unchanged files will ever be included in a backup.

If we perform a series of Differential backups, all the files that have changed since the original Normal backup will be included. Once a file has changed, it will be included in each Differential backup. To restore, we only need to restore the Normal backup and the last Differential backup.

Differential backups take up more space, but they are much easier to restore from than Incremental Backups.

What in the world is an Archive bit?

Along with a file's name and location on the hard drive, Windows stores a file's attributes, such as whether it is read only. One of the attributes for each file is the Archive attribute or bit. The Archive bit is set to True any time a file is changed. File Backup Pro, along with other backup programs, set a file's Archive bit to False when it has been backed up. This is how File Backup Pro knows which files have changed since the last backup.

What ports I need to open on a firewall for File Replication?

File Replication uses the Server Message Block (SMB) protocol to copy files between two hosts. SMB-based communications use the following ports:

* 137 (TCP/UDP) -- NetBIOS Name
* 138 (UDP) -- NetBIOS Datagram
* 139 (TCP) -- NetBIOS Session
* 445 (TCP) -- SMB over TCP

With a default installation and network parameters, File Replication will attempt to connect to the remote host using TCP port 139. If you would like to force File Replication to use the newer SMB over TCP port (445), then you can disable NetBIOS over IP on the source system.

You can disable NetBIOS on a network interface by accessing the interface’s TCP/IP properties, clicking the Advanced button, then clicking the WINS tab, and finally clicking the "Disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" radio button. With NetBIOS disabled, File Replication will automatically connect to the target system using TCP port 445. So you need to allow access through your firewall from the source system to the target system with port 445 as the destination.

File Replication can't replicate shared folders, what should i do?

File Replication can't copy MS shares and share permissions. Because we think this option can be dangerous if used incorrectly! It is a very good idea to see first to make sure what folders would be shared and share them with handly.
On the other hand, The Windows Registry can be exported to a text file, making it easy to edit or transport from one computer to another:
Step 1:Click the Start menu and click Run.
Step 2:Type "cmd" and click OK.
Step 3:Type " reg export hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\lanmanserver\shares myshares.reg " to migrate shares and share permissions to a text file
Step 4:Copy it on the new server.
Step 5:Type "reg import myshares.reg" to import it on the new server.
Step 6: Then you can change in the registry the drive letter if you would need to modify the drive letter.
Step 7: Then restart windows.
